could be an effective tool in these areas , but its special value in education would be problem-solving and research . There is an obvious limitation which must retard the introduction of the computer into the learning system . There is a serious shortage of software and courseware . Sophisticated computer programming is time-consuming , expensive and difficult , if one is determined not to compromise with quality . Technology in education is being attempted by several institutes but , as I am familiar only with the work done by the C . E . T ., I shall briefly describe some of its experience with the computer as an educational tool . For elementary and intermediate schools a series of "practice and evaluation" programmes known as TOAM has been developed . "Practice and evaluation" is not simply a different name for "drill and practice . " The former signifies a different approach in that the testing and evaluation have become integral parts of the software and courseware . They are not of one uniform pattern to suit the average student only . The TOAM software and courseware have multiple levels and adapt themselves to each learner individually . After a few introductory questions to each child , the computer evaluates the capability of the pupil . The computer then "goes down" to the pupil's level and gradually lifts him or her to higher achievements , through questions and answers of ever-increasing difficulty . At the end of a period , usually a week , the computer gives the educator reports about the progress or the weaknesses of every pupil . The educator can then plan the required remedial guidance for each pupil individually . "Practice and evaluation" programmes have been developed for elementary and intermediate schools , grades 1 to 8 ( ages five / six to fourteen ) in arithmetic , reading and English . Geometry and Hebrew spelling is now under development . For secondary and vocational schools , computer programmes have been developed for grades 9 to 12 ( ages fifteen to eighteen ) for computer studies , computerized accountancy , word pr 6 cessing and touch typing . Technical English and electricity are now under development .
