THE TEACHERS

עמוד:5

The teachers who had academic degrees in their special subjects ( Bible , mathematics , physics , etc . ) also take two-year courses at the University Schools of Education in subjects relating to education . About 15 per cent of the elementary school teachers and about 6 per cent of the intermediate school teachers had not obtained the matriculation certificate . They were pressed into service and given special courses ; most of them taught vocational subjects . The other teachers who had no university training received their teachers' diplomas at the teacher training colleges . In 1982 / 83 , there were forty-four teacher training colleges for Hebrew education and two for Arab education . The former had about 12 , 000 students , of whom about 10 , 500 were women ; the latter had about 400 students . At present four of the forty-four Hebrew colleges are authorized to award the B . Ed . degree . Of the 12 , 000 students in the Hebrew teacher training colleges , 730 studied towards the B . Ed . degree , the rest towards a teacher's diploma . Diploma requirements can be satisfied by two-year courses for kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers of the very young ; three-year courses for teachers of older age groups in elementary schools and for intermediate schools ; fouryear courses leading to the B . Ed . for secondary school teachers . The curriculum at the teacher training colleges is usually divided as follows : 40 to 45 per cent subject-matter ; 15 to 20 per cent
