9 delineates and illustrates the ‘ liturgical present’, as it is expressed through various modes of deixis in early Piyyut texts . Chapter Two characterizes typical occurrences of anachrony ( principally analepses ) in early Piyyut compositions which relate to pre - existence themes, and the contribution of such patterns to the sense of perspective . Chapter Three focuses on the remarkable transitions from the primordial past of pre - existence to the liturgical present of the actual congregational prayer situation in early Piyyut texts, including close readings of selected passages . Part Five , ‘ Epilogue : Hindsight and Foresight’, includes two chapters . The first chapter focuses on the development of one central pre - existence theme – pre - existent Wisdom / Torah .
