CHAPTER TWELVE THE CONCEPT OF DEVEKUT IN HASIDISM

From Lurianic Kabbalah To Hasidism 126 Hasidic Devekut refers to the mystical union of man with the divine, be it with the internal divine element in his soul, or with the divine essence which surrounds him, even to the extent of the complete annihilation and abolition of the self . This Hasidic Devekut takes on different shapes . Sometimes it is connected with an immense ecstatic awakening and enthusiasm, which threatens man with the great danger of the departure of his soul, its “coming out of the vessels”, and a complete abandon of the body . At other times, this Devekut finds its expression in states of utter passivity, in which man delivers himself entirely into the hands of God, once he has gathered strength and wiped out the individual aspect of his existence as a separate self, and is filled with the divine light that now pours impedingly into him .
