Editor's Introduction

Israel Finkelstein, among the most prominent scholars of the early periods, has already dealt in the past with various subjects associated with ancient Jerusalem, and has participated in other City of David Studies of Ancient Jerusalem conferences . His lecture at this year’s conference highlighted the subject of literacy in Judah as seen from the vantage point of the Kingdom of Israel . The conference volume presents readers with a Hebrew translation of another recent article by Finkelstein, which deals with an additional aspect of epigraphical analysis from Judah . The conclusions in this article have important implications not only for dating the beginning of writing in Judah ( which Finkelstein believes occurred no earlier than the late eighth century BCE ) , but also the foundations of the accepted reconstruction of the development of Hebrew script in the Iron Age .
