16 the continued use of jerusalem’s canaanite fortifications during the period of the judean monarchy Over the past two decades, excavations on the lower eastern slope of the City of David have revealed a massive Middle Bronze Age fortification system around the main water source, the Gihon Spring, associated with Jerusalem’s ancient water systems ( Fig . 1, and see e . g . , Reich and Shukron 2009, 2010 ) . 1 In recent years, additional data has come to light at the site that attest to the continued use of the Middle Bronze fortifications until the end of the Iron Age, that is, the period of the Judean monarchy . In this article we will present the relevant findings discovered over the past two years in the Spring House excavation, focusing on the complexes around the fortifications, dating their various phases and discussing their significance .
