68 The Second Temple Period Central Drainage Channel in Jerusalem Introduction 1 Two sections of the stepped street were discovered close to the Second Temple period Shiloah Pool during the course of the archaeological excavations that we conducted in 2006 . We reported these discoveries in the past ( Shukron and Reich 2007 ) . These two street sections are located on the two sides of the Tyropoeon Valley, which is the central valley that divided the city from north to south, with the street situated in it and ascending northward, in the direction of the Temple Mount . Drainage channels were discovered under these two street sections . While it is barely possible to crawl on all four in the channel under the eastern section, the channel under the western section is a large drainage channel in which one can walk freely .
