1940 - 1920 V . F . Calverton, A Radical Magazinist for Black Intellectuals, ] * 265 [ Why did Calverton sympathize the Black people ? In answer to a woman, who mistakenly explained his close friendship with Blacks by saying that he was a colored man himself, he clearly stated : I am interested in the Negro people because they represent such remarkable qualities . I am interested in them also because White people have suppressed and exploited them for many centuries now, and so often by the devious and deceptive means of pretense and piety . Calverton’s love for suppressed peoples, who had been exploited for centuries, determined his attitude toward the Black as well as toward the Jew . He strongly denounced antisemitism and what he called “the myth of Nordic superiority . ” As a Marxist, he explained the rise of the Anglo - Saxon civilization in social and economic terms, rather than in racial ones .
