The name of James McDonald as a possible candidate had been welcomed by Jewish and Gentile groups in the United States . James Grover McDonald first became interested in international affairs as a college student of political science . While a graduate student at Harvard, he began to teach history and political science at Harvard and radcliffe, later returning to his alma Mater, Indiana University, as an assistant professor . He eventually served as chairman of the american foreign Policy association for 15 years ( 1918 - 1933 ) .
