5. Christian Charity: The Unitarian Service Committee’s Relief Activities on Behalf of Refugees from Nazism, 1940-1945

In November 1 44, this course was given to a select group of Poles who planned to return to their country as relief workers . Medical aid, almost the symbol of the USc in certain parts of Europe, was also offered in Switzerland and medico - social emergency units were organized by the Geneva office . It encouraged Polish refugee physicians to take the initiative in establishing a network of “hygiene posts,” each comprised of a doctor, a nurse, a laboratory assistant, a secretary and a welfare worker . Each team was to be equipped with X - ray facilities as well as medical supplies . 53 Communications between Geneva and Boston were not facile, in spite of Swiss neutrality, since it was surrounded by Axis countries .
