xxi Abstracts Remembering the Shoah from Paris to Jerusalem : The Reception of Jean - Claude Grumberg’s Plays in Israel Denis Charbit The Holocaust became a central theme in Israeli theater during the 1980 s . However, very few plays on this topic written by non - Israeli playwrights were produced in Israel . Thus, the reception of plays by the French author Jean - Claude Grumberg on Israel’s stages particularly stands out . Between 1975 and 2019, leading Israeli theaters staged no less than five of Grumberg’s plays about the Holocaust and the fate of European Jewry in the twentieth century . Critics expressed a wide range of opinions on them, ranging from enthusiasm and appreciation to disappointment and rejection . The goal of this paper is to show that, regardless of whether the response was positive or negative, it cannot be explained solely on the basis of the critics’ professional assessment .
