PAULETTE KERSHENOVICH SCHUSTER KEEPING THE HOME FIRES BURNING: THE ROLE OF SYRIAN JEWISH WOMEN IN PRESERVING COMMUNAL IDENTITY

Jewish identity in Mexico is characterized by cultural and traditional elements , which are manifested in the act of identification vis - à - vis community sectors of ethnic origin . As such , the Mexican Jewish community comprises four main sectors , distinguished by their places of origin : Ashkenazim ( Eastern European Jews ) , Sephardim ( Jews from the Balkans , Turkey and the Iberian Peninsula ) , and two Syrian Jewish sub - groups : Halebis ( from Aleppo ) , and Shamis ( from Damascus ) . This article looks at the construction of Jewish identities of third and fourth generation women of Syrian origin in Mexico City . Their sense of belonging is rooted in their identification with their community sectors and their ethnic characterization . Syrian Jewish women play important and complex roles in the preservation and maintenance of their multiple identities ( ethnic , cultural , national , and religious ) .
