Abstract

The censorship of information that may endanger a country ’ s security during times of emergency or war is customary in democratic countries and is considered a derivative of the right to life , for which limiting freedom of press is justified and even essential . At the same time , the military censorship and gag order regulations in Israel are problematic . The formal guidelines for applying military censorship in the State of Israel , the pre - State British Defence ) Emergency ( Regulations of 1945 , is an outdated and anti - democratic arrangement . At the same time , there is an informal arrangement between the Editors ’ Committee and the security authorities ; this , however , discriminates against the non - institutional media and violates the public ’ s right to know . An alternative channel that security authorities have employed in recent years – court petitions to issue gag orders – exists despite there being no proper legal basis for this practice .
