Introduction

Professor Yitzhak Shichor Since the late 1970 s China has been undergoing a dramatic and unprecedented change . A major part of this change is related to a series of reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping , leader of China after Mao Zedong , which can be summed up under the heading " Four Modernizations " . All four deal with Chinese internal affairs : modernization of industry , agriculture , science and technology , and national security . No mention of foreign policy , or even international economic ties , comes under this heading . Indeed , most scholars of contemporary China attribute the change in China ' s status , both internally and externally , to the extensive reforms which occurred in China after the time of Mao .
