Florida was a key battleground state in the 2004 presidential election . Its large Electoral Vote share ( 10 % of the total 270 needed to win ) coupled with the inordinate amount of attention paid to Florida following Election Day 2000 made Florida one of the most important states to watch in 2004 . One key subtext in the battle over Florida’s 2004 Electoral Vote was the battle over its Jewish vote . Florida’s one half million Jews constituted the third largest in the United States ( behind New York and California ) . In 2000 , elderly Jews , a large percentage of whom survived the Holocaust and lived in Palm Beach County , Florida , claimed that poor ballot design caused them to vote for Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster when they intended to vote for Al Gore and Joe Lieberman . Elderly Jewish Holocaust survivors , facing the choice between Gore-Lieberman and Buchanan-Foster , claimed to have chosen Gore-Lieberman while the vote distribution in Palm Beach County suggested otherwise .
