Counseling in an arena of conflict : Insights from work in the field of social change Tammy Rubel-Lifschitz & Yael Ben-David How can the counseling process support social-change leaders in the midst of conflict ? Can this process help leaders channel the powerful dynamic of conflict into constructive change , and avoid escalation , demonization and destruction ? For social-change leaders , conflict is inherent in their work as their attempts to change the existing reality collide with the efforts of those who support it and benefit from its ’ existence . Social-change leaders usually utilize counseling in situations of difficulty and crisis , when every step seems urgent and crucial . As their consultants , our main challenge was to help them rise above the emotional turmoil of conflict , and adopt a more strategic , mindful and practical state of mind .
